"Have Dog, Will Travel - 10 Months on the Road"

The summer months are time for vacation travel and adventure - and the Delta Group's program is that and more.

A few years ago, Sylvia Rose, with her dog Meadow, set out in her Subaru station wagon, pulling a 13-foot Scamp trailer. For 10 months and 35,000 miles she camped her way through the United States and Canada, stopping frequently to see scenic and historic sites.

Starting out in late June she traveled north to Alaska and the Yukon via the Marine Highway Ferry, then returning down the Alcan Highway. Following the fall colors she crossed Montana and the Dakotas, focusing especially on historic Indian cultural sites, and then continued east as far as Niagara Falls before heading south for the winter. She visited Charleston SC, including a stop to work on a Habitat for Humanity housing project, before traveling as far south as the Florida Keys. In early spring she headed west. Stops included Memphis, St. Louis, the Natchez Trace, San Antonio, Big Bend National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns. In New Mexico and Arizona she explored "Indian Country" and unique desert canyon scenery and parks. Her final camp stop was in Yosemite Valley in April, to see cascading waterfalls and dogwood trees in bloom.

Sylvia, a long-time Walnut Creek/Concord resident, has traveled extensively, with extended residences in Japan, Switzerland, and Israel.

Join the Delta Group for Sylvia's PowerPoint presentation, an armchair journey that may inspire you to have an adventure of your own this summer. Before the program, we'll briefly discuss local environmental issues, and informaton about summertime activities and events will be availaable.
