Water and Wildflowers. Join us at the next meeting of the Mount Diablo group for a power point presentation and talk on two subjects near and dear to the heart of every Contra Costa County resident, water and wildflowers.
Life in our Mediterranean climate, with wet winters and dry summers, inspired passionate gardener and environmental educator Judy Adler to begin thinking about how to conserve water. Recognizing that the bulk of her water use was outdoors, Judy opted to install a rain harvesting system in her Walnut Creek residence.
The roofs of our homes are a great source of water that would otherwise enter storm drains. Rainwater is also the untreated water that plants, fish, amphibians and other animals prefer. Judy's system stores more than 10,000 gallons of winter rainwater for summer use to refill her large pond and to irrigate her food garden and orchard. Judy believes such systems should be public policy- encouraged by water agencies and mandated by legislation. Join us to learn the how to, why, and cost of installing a rainwater harvesting system. Resources on the topic will be available.
(On Sunday, March 14, Judy will provide a first hand view of her rain harvesting system. The tour includes a visit to the Adler Garden, which thrives without water and is fossil fuel free. Details will be provided at the Wednesday evening talk.)
Following Judy’s presentation, Ken Lavin will present a PowerPoint wildflower program, highlighting flower folklore, the adventures of early botanical explorers, and interesting tidbits about the unsung heroes, flower pollinators.

Death Valley: Eureka Dunes & the Racetrack 2C2 Car Camp. Hike two of northern Death Valley's most amazing natural landmarks. The Eureka Dunes lie in the shadow of the colorful Last Chance Range, and we'll hike over 3 miles of sand and up 700' to the top of the highest dunes in California. The Racetrack is a dry playa on which rocks leave mysterious tracks in the mud, as if they have moved themselves - although no-one has ever seen them do so. We'll hike the 3-mile, 3000' steep trail up from the Racetrack to Ubehebe Peak, the highest in the Last Chance Mountains, for panoramic views of Saline Valley and the Panamint Range.
On Day 1 we make the drive to Big Pine, via Tahoe/Reno, with spectacular views of the snowcapped Sierra as we drive down the Eastern side. Day 2 we'll drive to the dunes, hike, and set up camp there overnight. Day 3 we'll drive to the Racetrack, hike and camp at Mesquite Spring campground. Day 4 we'll drive out and home.
4WD/high ground-clearance vehicles are required; we will hopefully have enough vehicles with drivers willing to carpool to carry all participants. Average temperatures in early April range from 85 (high) to 60 (low). Wildflower sightings are possible. Individual Commissary. Leaders: Roger Williams and JP Torres.

India, Women’s Empowerment, and Climate Change. The United Nations states that women, especially poor women, are most vulnerable to climate change. Around the world women are tackling the threat and overcoming numerous obstacles. Climate change and India is an increasing focus of the Sierra Club, which gives out an annual “Green Livelihood Award” to exemplary environmental organizations there, including women’s groups working on sustainable livelihoods. The Club’s India work supports and encourages renewable energy initiatives needed to stimulate a new environmental economy and create sustainable livelihoods for India's citizens.
Suzanne York has traveled to India three times, most recently as part of a study tour with the Sierra Club’s Population and Environment program, meeting with groups trying to improve women’s rights, health, education and the environment. They are doing amazing work in their efforts to create a more sustainable future in a country of 1.1 billion that will overtake China as the most populous in a few decades. Come hear first-hand how the fates of brothel workers, impoverished communities, tigers, the Taj Mahal and Himalayan kingdoms are connected.
