Hike Ratings: The Sierra Club uses the following system to rate the length and elevation gain of hikes. Elevation gain represents the sum of all elevation gains per outing.
Miles Per Day:
1...up to 6 miles
2...6 - 10 miles
3...10 - 15 miles
4...15 - 20 miles
5...over 20 miles
|
Elevation Gain Per Day:
A...less than 1,000 feet
B...1,000 to 2,000 feet
C...2,000 to 3,000 feet
D...over 3,000 feet |
Example: A typical Mt. Tam outing rated 2B indicates the hike will cover 6 - 10 miles, with 1,000 - 2,000 feet of climb.
A minihike is 3 - 4 miles with under 500 feet of climbing.
Backpack ratings include a third digit for travel:
T - Trail
1 - Limited/easy cross-country
2 - Moderate cross-country
3 - Strenuous/difficult cross-country
Cost: GLS does not charge for day outings.
Reservations: Reservations for hikes are not needed, except where noted.
Carpools: Riders are expected to share the driver's expenses including bridge tolls, park entrance fees, gas and wear-and-tear. GLS recommends that each rider pay the driver 8 cents per mile plus a share of bridge tolls and other fees. GLS does not guarantee that a driver or rider will be available at a carpool site. Riders should never arrive late; drivers should never leave early.
Riders and drivers arrange carpools themselves. GLS does not take any responsibility for the safety of carpools.
Bad Weather Policy: Continuous rain usually cancels a trip; if in doubt, call the leader.
Other Trip Information: For more information about any hike (meeting place, time, difficulty) contact the hike leader.
