Sierra Club links
The San Francisco Bay Area Gay & Lesbian Sierrans is an outings and conservation club for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people, and our friends.
We are an official activities section of the Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club. Founded in 1986, the Bay Chapter GLS was the
Sierra Club's first gay and lesbian activities section. We're still one of the largest of a growing number of GLS chapters
around the country.
Throughout the year, we sponsor a variety of activities which offer something for almost everyone who enjoys the outdoors.
GLS outings run the gamut from easy urban strolls to vigorous peak hikes; relaxed car camping to demanding wilderness
backpacks and naturalist-led walks; to hands-on restoration and trail maintenance projects. Everyone is welcome on our
outings, whether or not they have joined GLS.
It was a Very Merry 2009 Holiday Party!
Our holiday party in the Rainbow Room at the Center was a fabulous success! Some said the potluck was the best display they had ever seen. It did seem like a lot of folks went out of their way to cook something yummy. There were lots of new faces, of both men and women, which is always wonderful to see. Many GLS "regulars" participated, making attendance somewhere between 80 to 100 people. Erica Tucker had hike leaders come up on stage to take a bow and receive a gift acknowledging their contributions to the Club. Much to Erica's chagrin, Russ Hartman again won the award for most active hike leader of the year! The prospective 2010 Governing Committee members were introduced. Erica announced the donations GLS will make this year to support four very deserving conservation organizations, which you will read more about in the year to come. All-in-all it was a lovely party with much mingling and nibbling (oh my!).
During the party, our 2nd annual Silent Auction, headed up by the amazing and energetic Ingrid Kreis, was great fun, with competitive bidding once again going down to the final seconds. With some 30 items on the auction block ranging from athletic socks to movie tickets to overnight accommodations to a 5-course dinner with a show, we raised over $1800.
